PDF to Word converter

Turn a PDF into an editable Word document — free, with no sign-up and no watermark. The conversion happens inside this page, on your own device, so your file is never uploaded to us or to anyone else.

Converted in your browser. The file never leaves your device.

How to convert a PDF to Word

  1. Choose your PDF

Drag it onto the box above, or click Choose PDF file. It is read straight from your disk into this browser tab.

  2. Let it convert

Every page's text is read and rebuilt as Word paragraphs and headings. A typical report takes a few seconds.

  3. Save the Word file

The .docx download starts on its own. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and edit it like any other document.

What you get — and what you do not

A PDF does not store a document the way Word does. It stores glyphs at coordinates on a page, which is why no converter can give you back the original file. Being straight about where that line falls is more useful than promising a perfect copy:

Comes across well

  • All the text, as real editable text — not a picture
  • Type sizes, bold, italic and the colour of the ink
  • Headings, reading order and page breaks
  • Lists, as real Word lists you can renumber
  • Tables, as real Word tables with their columns
  • Pictures and charts, lifted off the page
  • Alignment, indents, line spacing and paper size
  • Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu marked right-to-left

Does not come across

  • Scanned pages, which have no text to extract at all
  • The original font files — the closest match on your device is used
  • Form fields, comments and footnote links
  • Text boxes and floating captions, which join the main flow
  • Running headers and footers, which become ordinary paragraphs
  • Word's exact line breaks, since the text reflows as you edit

Best used for

  • Reusing the wording of a contract or a report
  • Getting a quotable draft out of a published paper
  • Rewriting a CV someone sent you as a PDF
  • Pulling text out for translation
  • Anything you were about to retype by hand

Your file stays on your device

The usual way to build a converter is to accept an upload, process it on a server and send the result back. That means your contract, payslip or patient letter sits on a machine you do not control, protected by a retention promise you cannot verify. This page works differently: the code that reads your PDF and writes the Word file is downloaded to your browser and runs there. There is no upload endpoint, nothing is logged, and we could not retrieve your document if we wanted to. Load the page, switch your connection off, and it still converts.

Is this PDF to Word converter really free?

Yes. There is no account, no trial, no watermark and no daily limit. The conversion runs on your own computer, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.

Do my files get uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is read by code running in your browser tab and the Word file is built in the same place. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is stored, and we never see the document. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the converter still works.

Will the Word file keep my layout?

Far more than it used to. Type sizes, bold and italic, the colour of the text, alignment, indents, line spacing, headings, lists, tables and pictures all come across, and the Word file is set up on the same size of paper as the PDF. Columns are read in the right order rather than flattened. What it cannot give you is the original font files or Word's own line breaks, because a PDF stores positioned glyphs rather than a document structure — so expect a close, fully editable copy rather than a byte-for-byte one.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Not yet. A scan is a picture of a page with no text layer, so there is nothing to extract — that needs OCR. The tool detects this case and tells you instead of handing you an empty document. OCR is on the roadmap for this page.

What about a password-protected PDF?

A PDF that needs a password to open cannot be read, and the tool will say so. Remove the password in your PDF reader first, then convert.

Does it work in Arabic, Hindi or Chinese?

Yes. Text in any script is extracted as it is, and right-to-left paragraphs in Arabic or Urdu are marked right-to-left in the Word file so they display correctly when you open it.

How big a PDF can I convert?

Up to 25 MB. Pages are read one at a time and released before the next is opened, so a three-hundred-page PDF uses no more memory than a three-page one and the tool stays usable on a phone.

Which format do I get, .doc or .docx?

You get .docx, the modern Word format. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages and WPS Office without any conversion step.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on both iPhone and Android. Pick the PDF from your files or your cloud storage app and the .docx lands in your downloads.

Handling documents at scale?

We build document pipelines, OCR and e-signature flows into business systems. If your team is converting files by hand, that is usually a sign something upstream can be automated.
